A música retrata a batalha histórica da Guarda Suiça em 6 de maio de 1527, quando as tropas invasoras de Carlos V de Habsburgo, qu estavam em guerra com Francisco I, invadem Roma. O exército tinha cerca de 18000 mercenários! Em frente à Basílica de São Pedro e depois nas imediações do Altar-Mor, a Guarda Suíça lutou contra cerca de 1000 soldados alemães e espanhóis. A Guarda Suiça formou um círculo em volta do Papa Clemente VII para protege-lo e levá-lo em segurança ao Castelo de Santo Ângelo. Morreram cerca de 147 guardas dos 189 que a haviam na época, porém 900 dos 1000 mercenários foram mortos pelos suíços.
A música tem o nome "The Last Stand" que é um termo militar de quando um batalhão fica em forma defensiva contra um grande ataque.
